The Pen sky Marten’s Apparatus is used for determining the closed Flash Point of all Petroleum HAVING A Flash point above 48.9*C (120*F), except for out-back Bitumens.

The main components of the Pen sky Martens Flash Point Apparatus are follows:

    Either of the thermometers may be employed if the indicated reading falls within 93* to 110*C. For tests in which the indicated reading falls within the limits –7 to 93*C (20 to 200*F), the IF 15C thermometer shall be used and for tests in which the indicated reading falls within the limits 110 to 370*C (230 to 700*F) the IP 16C thermometer shall be used.
    A blue print figure 1 is attached to show the constructional details.


    Descriptions:

     

    The brass oil cup is meant for heating the Petroleum Products to the Flash Point. It carries a mark all round in the inside to show the required level of liquid.

    The cup has a flange which rests on the brass top and the lower parts of the cup is within the Air Bath or Heating Vessel. The top plate is screwed on the Air Bath through brass spacers, so that an air gap is  produced between the cup and the Air Bath by which the transmission to the cup is almost entirely by heated air. The cup flange has an indicator to fit correctly on the Top Plate. The heat is supplied from 220V A.C. Mains, by an electric heater kept below the Air Bath and the regulation of the heat is done by the Energy regulator. The function of the Air Bath and the Top Plate is to prevent external air droughts from interfering with the heating.


    The cover proper of the lid is made of brass plate and has a tubular fitments which enables it to sit on the cup. The cover proper is illustrated in Figure 2

    It has three holes B,A & C in the peripheral region and also one circular hole which carries a split tube for taking brass collar of a thermometer, and one central hole admits stirrer rod.

    The peripheral hole A is larger and the flame exposure to the oil under test is given through it. The flame is produced by a burning gas jet of a gas reservoir fitted close to the hole A. The gas is supplied from gas mains. The shutter is a brass disc fitted concentrically on the cover proper. It  has two peripheral holes matching the hole b & A of the cover proper. The shutter can be rotated by the spring loaded handle G which is mounted on the cover proper. Initially the shutter keeps all the holes B,A, &C, closed proper . Initially the shutter keeps all the holes B,A & C closed but by slight rotation all the three holes get exposed. A lever arrangement fitted to the shutter tilts the gas Chamber in such a way that the gas jet with the flame enters the hole momentarily.

    The gas chamber has another ancillary jet called the Pilot flame F in figure 1. This enables the main gas jet to be relighted if extinguished during the test. The pilot flame burns continuously and is away from any of the holes of the cover proper.

    Where gas supplied is not available, an oil burner replaces the gas chamber. A cotton wick produces the flame, otherwise the mechanism is similar as for the gas jet. A pilot oil flame is also provided in this case.

    Description:

    Procedure:

    Pour the sample, heated in a water bath if necessary, into the jar to a height of 51 to 57 mm. Close the jar with the cork-carrying thermometer No.1 so that the thermometer bulb is immersed vertically in the sample with the beginning of the capillary 3 mm below the surface. Heat the sample, without stirring, to a temperature of 46*C in a bath maintained at a  temperature not higher than 48*C Cool in the sample to 32*C in air or in a water bath at approximately 25*C. If a pour point below minus 35*C is expected, cool the sample in air or in water bath to 16*C and replace the thermometer No.1 by thermometer No.2 Fit the gasket on to the jar    25 MM from the bottom and insert the jar into the jacket. The disc, the gasket, and the jacket shall be kept clean and dry.

    If a pour point above 32*C is expected, heat the sample to 46*C or to a temperature 8*C above the expected pour point, and fit the jar into the jacket immediately. One the sample has cooled enough to allow the formation of wax crystals, take great care not to disturb the mass of sample nor to permit the thermometer to shift in the sample. Any disturbance of the spongy network of crystals will lead to false results. Maintain the bath temperature at minus 1*C to plus 2*C. Support the jacket and jar in a vertical position in the bath so that not more than 25 mm projects form the cooling medium. Beginning at a temperature 12*C above the expected pour point, at each thermometer reading which is a multiple of 3*C, remove the jar from the jacket carefully, and tilt it just enough to see whether the oil will move and the replace it, this complete operation shall not take more than 3 seconds.If the oil has not ceased to flow when it has been cooled to 9*C, place the jar and jacket in another bath maintained at a temperature of minus 32*C to minus 35*C. If the pour point is very low, maintain additional baths with successively lower temperature differentials of about 18*C, transfer in the jar and jacket when the temperature of the sample reaches a point 27*C above the temperature of the new bath. As soon as the sample ceases to flow when the jar is tilted, hold the jar in horizontal position for exactly 5 seconds. If the sample shows any movement replace the jar in the jacket and cool down the sample another 3*C. If the oil shows no movement during the 5 second, record the reading of the thermometer.

    Certain lubricating oils tend to  move as a whole. The point at which they cease to flow is consequently more difficult to detect. For black oil, cylinder stock, and non-distillate fuel the result obtained by the procedure described in 9.1 and 9.2 is the upper (maximum) pour point. Determine the lower (Minimum) Pour Point by heating the sample with stirring to 105*C, pouring it into the jar, cooling it to 32*C as before.

    Calculation and Reporting : Add 3*C to the temperature recorded above and corrected for thermometer errors if necessary, and report the result as the pour point. For black oil, cylinder stock etc report both the upper and lower pour point.

    Precision: Results of Duplicate tests shall not differ by more than the following amounts.

    Description:

    Scope:


    • This method of test is designed for the determination of the closed flash points of cutback bitumen’s of which the flash points do not exceed 230’ F ( 110’ C).  Use is made of a modified form of the Abel apparatus.
    • The results obtained by this method do not differ appreciably from the minimum flash point of the material under equilibrium conditions of temperature and  vapour pressure.

    Outline of Method:

    The sample is place in the cup of an Abel flash point apparatus and heated at a very slow uniform rate with stirring.  A small test – flame is directed into the cup at regular intervals, and the flash point is taken as the lowest temperature at which application of the test flame causes the vapour above the sample to ignite.

    Apparatus:

    • Flash Point Apparatus-  The apparatus to be employed shall be an able flash point apparatus with stirrer, as described in IP 33, Appendix I, but provided with means for mechanical stirring. 
    • Provision shall also be made for maintaining a good circulation in the water-bath, e.g.   by means of a gentle stream of air being introduced through a fine tube entering the bath through a hole bored for the purpose.
    • Thermometers – Conforming to the specification IP 43, F or C, and IP 44, F or C.

    Sample:

    In view of the case with which volatile matter can be lost from some cutback bitumen’s, all possible precautions should be taken against excessive handling of the sample in order to minimize its exposure to the atmosphere.  In all cases, samples for the flash point test must be submitted in closed containers and it is strongly recommended, particularly in cases of dispute, that a separate sample (at least 4 oz (100g) should be made available for this test.

    Procedure:

    • If the sample is too viscous for ease of pouring at laboratory temperature, warm it gently in its closed container in a water-bath taking care not to raise the temperature of the sample higher than 20’ F (11’C) below its flash point.

    Calculation and Reporting:

    • Correct the observed flash point to standard atmospheric pressure using the following rule:
    • For each inch (25 mm) below 29.92 inches (760 mm) barometric reading, add 1.6’ F (0.9’C) to the flash point.
    • For each inch (25 mm) above 29.92 inches (760 mm) barometric reading, sub tract 1.6’ F (0.9’C) from the flash point.
    • Report the corrected flash point to the nearest 1’F (0.5’C) as flash point  (Closed) of cutback Bitumen, IP 113.
